AZ to WA: Day 1
2:27 PMBrett drove the moving truck up to Washington, and then flew back to Mesa on Sunday evening. We spent some time with family and did a few final preparations.
Monday morning, we woke up early to get on the road. Our original itinerary, was to stop in Williams, AZ and go to Bearizona. Then make our way up to Panguitch, UT--which is Brett's mom's hometown, and explore there a little while. We wanted to drive by her childhood home and find the picture of Brett's grandpa as a member of the basketball team, hanging in the movie theater. And then finally, get up to my aunt and uncle's house late that evening.
But, of course, a kid started throwing up. Because I have started to learn...that is life with children. At the most inopportune moments (like in the middle of a cross-country move and the day that a 12-hour road trip is planned) are when children get sick and throw up.
We were just getting everything settled in the car and about to wake the kids up to get them dressed, when Vivienne started crying and when I walked in she was laying in the middle of her own throw up.
So...
We hung out and didn't leave until late morning and took a detour instead. We booked a last-minute hotel in Las Vegas and headed that way instead.
I have to say, by the time we made it to Las Vegas--and the car said it was 117 degrees outside and we waited a solid 20+ minutes while Brett was in line to check in, and then we hauled a smorgasbord of luggage up to our room on the 17th floor, and Vivienne screamed her head off for a while, and the billboards (enough said)--all I could think about is what a Hell Hole Las Vegas is.
But Vivienne started to feel better, and once it was dark and the kids were sound asleep, Brett snuck downstairs to the Johnny Rockets in the casino and bought us big giant milkshakes. And we sat in a pitch black hotel room and sipped away at them and tried to quietly turn on the TV. It is tricky business to hang out in a hotel room with two sleeping toddlers.
And Landon just thought it was the coolest thing ever, that we were staying in a "castle"! And the kids thought it was great that they got to take showers instead of baths, since there wasn't a tub in our room. And Landon squealed with excitement every time we got in the elevator because apparently country-living doesn't give our kids many opportunities to ride in them, and I did not realize it until that very moment.
And honestly, after we all had a good night's sleep, the next morning we went and got some Krispy Kreme donuts and ate them in the car on the way to our next destination, and we were all happy again.
